Search Engine Marketing: (SEM) is the online promotion of websites to people that are searching or surfing the internet via the use of keywords and content matching. There are two main methods, the first being SEO or Search Engine Optimisation, the second being PPC or Pay Per Click advertising. Both try to drive more traffic to your site.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) When a user searches in Google or search engine partner the higher your site is to the top the more hits you are likely to get. The process of optimising a website aims to get your website as high as possible in the list for targeted search words or words that users are likely to type in to find your products. For example if you sell wooden benches in Cape Town, you would like to appear in the list near the top if some one searches for "wooden benches in cape town". These hits are often referred to as organic hits as they are displayed for free and you do not pay even if a user clicks on your link.
Pay Per Click (PPC) uses another method to drive traffic to your website. When a user searches the results are displayed as well as adwords links that appear along side them on the right and in some cases above the results section. These are text adverts that people have paid for to be displayed in the list. Simply put, the more you pay per click the higher you rank in the adword listing areas. PPC ad are also referred to as sponsored links and adwords.
